Cook Beautiful by Athena Calerone
Why does her design work so well? Her recipes are derived from seasonal organic ingredients. Her photography have a natural & organic feel. She takes the word "beautiful" seriously with much attention paid to lighting and color. Her photography reflects the light and feel of each season.
Backyard Cooking concept by Chelsea Zgierski via Behance.net
Why does her design work so well? From her own written statement on Behance: All the recipes have been designed to be simple, and the food easily sourced whilst on a camping holiday. The graphic style of the book is very laid back and quirky to appeal to the more outdoorsy demographic. The typography has a personalised, hand-drawn feel, whilst the use of imagery is soft and rustic to reflect the timeless camping vibe. The book contains a section on different campsites and their adjacent farmer’s markets so travellers who aren’t familiar with the area can also enjoy local New Zealand produce. The book is small so it can be easily packed into a rucksack and taken with the traveller.
The Huxtaburger Book - The Art & Science of the Perfect Burger by Daniel Wilson
Why does his design work so well?
This is the second book design for this author & he uses the word "science" throughout the photography and design of the book. In his words:
We adopted a tongue-in-cheek tone by creating a scientific laboratory theme with 1980s style sweaters (referencing the Huxtables in The Cosby Show) poking out from under white lab coated hands throughout the book. We custom drew the chapter pages featuring fun diagramatical style imagery reminiscent of school textbooks. The front cover features a paper pop up of the anatomy of a burger. The book is a follow up to Daniel's first 'Huxtabook'.

The IKEA Recipe Series - Cook this page!
Why does this design work? It mimics Ikea's furniture instructions!
" Ikea may not be known for having the clearest of instructions regarding its furniture, but the company can teach me how to make dinner anytime. Because The Ikea Recipe Series is the irresistible cookbook you never knew was possible.
Technically developed as a marketing campaign by Leo Burnett and spotted by Design Taxi, the recipe series is a collection of posters that you can use to cook your dinner–literally. The posters serve as both a recipe sheet and a cooking wrapper for meals that range from salmon to cobbler to ravioli with meatballs." - written by Mark Wilson for www.fastco.designcom

3. New Product/Package Design
Create a high-end version of a typical packaged food product (such as a condiment) including the following:
Steps & Requirements
Steps & Requirements
- Find an existing packaged food product from your home or the supermarket. This could be ketchup, honey, spices, chocolate, a bottled beverage, coffee, tea, cookies, hot sauce, olives, peppers, cheese, peanut butter etc. Feel free to choose something unique to a specific culture.
- Create a plan & concept to re-invent this product for a high-end gourmet market. Choose a name! Choose a market! Who are you marketing this product to? What age-group? What music do they listen to? Where do they live? How do they dress?
- SHAPE & FORM: How should the actual package or bottle look? How can we visually emphasize the concept behind the product?
- Logo: Sketch an idea on paper first. Create a logo using Photoshop. You may not steal a logo from the internet! You may use existing images & fonts and alter these in order to create your logo.
- Labels: Use your logo and the product name to create 1 or 2 labels to be adhered to your package.
- Accessories: Twine? Glitter? Tassels? What other elements could be added to the final package?
- Create a board incorporating all of the above to market your creation.
How many different ways can a package for honey be designed?
